Daily Explorations: Animated Stills in After Effects

For this daily explorations project, I experimented with techniques for animating still images. The main purpose of this was to figure out an interesting way to incorporate stills into my demo reel. All of the animations were done in After Effects using 3D renders or PSD illustration files for the source images.

One of the techniques that I used was ‘split and slide’ as demonstrated in this video by ECAbrams. Simple technique and it looks great, the kind I like the best. For the layered PSD files, I played around with animating using layer masks and opacity to make an illustration appear from a white background. For the titles, I simply animated the opacity of the text via the range selector’s start control.

Enjoy.
